It’s a sad commentary on our political culture that a co-worker’s devotion can be twisted into a weapon and a president’s trust betrayed for entertainment. Mimetic theory would describe this as a community in crisis — one that is losing the ability to confront its own fears without sacrificing someone who embodies what others cannot tolerate. The only cure for a pattern like this is moral clarity — leaders who refuse to indulge mob dynamics, and workers who are willing to resist the temptation to join the mob when resentment begins.
